Circuit The Roman cities of Algeria

10 Days / 09 Nights

Algiers-Annaba via six other cities, a discovery circuit both of the natural splendors and the archaeological riches of these regions. Guelma, the ancient Galama, with its Roman theater and its museum, Djemila, formerly Cuicul, one of the most beautiful Roman archaeological sites classified world heritage by Unesco and Timgad, founded on the order of Trajan in the year 100 AD, are a glimpse of what awaits you during this journey.

Day 1 Saturday: Algiers

Arrival at Algiers airport.

Reception and assistance at Algiers airport.

Transfer to Algiers via Makam Echahid.

Then city tour with the famous Grande Poste, the national theater, the wilaya (the prefecture of Algiers) or the Galeries de France, converted into a museum of modern art.

Installation at the hotel.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 2 Sunday: Tipasa - Tomb of the Christian

Morning: direction Tipasa, city famous for its Roman archaeological remains and classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (theater, circus, thermal baths…) as well as many other Punic, Roman, Christian and African vestiges which attest to the richness of the history of this region. It was on this site that Albert Camus wrote "Noces" there in 1939.

Lunch.

Afternoon: on the way back, small detour to visit the tomb of the Christian, otherwise known as the Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania (tomb of Queen Selene wife of Juba II).

Dinner and overnight.



Day 3 Monday: Algiers - Casbah - Our Lady of Africa

Visit of the Casbah starting with the Palace of the Dey which is nicknamed "Dar Essoltane", the house of the Centenary, the Sidi Ramdane mosque (and Bir Chebana fountain), the Palace of Princess Khedaoudj, the Jamaa mosque al-Jdid and the Mustapha Pacha Palace. Then we will meet cabinetmaker Khaled Mahiout who will introduce us to his craft workshop.

Lunch.

Afternoon: Pass by the seafront with bastion 23 before climbing the heights of Algiers to visit Our Lady of Africa, overcoming the district of B?b El Oued.

Dinner and overnight.

Day 4 Tuesday: Algiers - S?tif (03 hours - 280 km)

Early departure towards the archaeological park of "Djemila", classified in the world heritage of UNESCO. Ancient Cuicul, it is one of the most beautiful sets of Roman ruins in the world (Caracala arch, large thermal baths, Christian basilica, the 4th century baptistery and the museum with its mosaic paintings).

Lunch.

Continue to S?tif with its famous Ain El Fouara fountain. Small stroll for a first contact with the city.

Dinner and overnight.

Day 5 Wednesday: S?tif - Tiddis - Constantine (180 km - 02 h)

Departure to Tiddis: an authentic Berber site modified by Roman civilization and fitted out according to their urbanization systems. The site of Tiddis (or Castellum Tidditanorum) on the edge of a hill, once depended on Cirta still retains Libyan inscriptions and symbols on Berber pottery. Direction Constantine.

Lunch.


Afternoon: Continuation with the city’s suspension bridges and discovery of the Rhummel gorges, the Cirta museum before going up to the old war memorial which offers magnificent panoramas.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6 Thursday: Constantine - Timgad - Batna- (120 km - 02 hours).

Breakfast.

Departure to Batna with a stop in the Saltworks (large Chott where salt is produced). Then continue with a visit to the M?dracen which is a famous Berber tomb.

Lunch.

Afternoon: Visit of the city of Timgad. The Roman city that was named Thamugadi in ancient times, founded by Emperor Trajan. Finally, continue with a visit to Lamb?se, the former Lambaesis. Arrival in Batna.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 7 Friday: Batna - Madaure- (Souk Ahras) –Khemissa (80 km 1h 30) –Annaba

Depart early by taking the road to M’Daourouche, (Madauros).

Visit the ancient Numidian city of Syphax from the 3rd century BC. AD and kingdom of Massinissa, it was then erected into an important Roman colony between 69 and 75 BC, under the emperor Vespasian.

Saint Augustine studied there until the age of 15.

Lunch.

Afternoon: direction Khamissa ancient ancient city of Thubursicu Numidarum


Over the centuries, it grew north and northwest to form a city of 65 hectares.

Thubursicu Numidarum, strategically, occupied a place of primary importance: it was located on a road connecting the port of Hippo Regius (near Annaba) to Theveste (Tebessa), camp of the African legion. Continue to Annaba.

Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 8 Saturday: Guelma - Annaba

Breakfast.

Departure at 8:30 am for the visit of the Ancient Theater of Guelma, built in 201. The theater also houses the Roman museum which has a large collection of coins.

Lunch.

Then towards the petrified waterfalls of Hammam Meskoutine. Its therapeutic virtues were appreciated by the Romans who called this place Aqua Tibatanae.

Return to Annaba.

Dinner and overnight in hotel.

Day 9 Sunday: Annaba

Breakfast.

Morning: visit of the Basilica of St Augustine as well as the Ancient Hippo site with its museum.


Lunch.

Afternoon: City tour passing by the ledge to Cap de Garde. Then direction Sera?di to admire a sunset on the terrace of the El Mountazah hotel, built by the architect Fernand Pouillon. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 10 Monday: Return

Breakfast.

Transfer to Annaba airport with assistance until boarding for return flight.
