Departure to khazbegi

On the way to Kazbek Mount you pass the fairy-tale architectural complex Ananuri situated on the Georgian Military Highway, on the shore of the Zhinvali reservoir. Ananuri was founded in the 16th century as a fortress, and belonged to the dukes of Aragvi. It stood as a guardian to the Northern boarders of Georgia. The characteristic architectural design of the late medieval period includes a fortress, two churches, an old watch tower, prison and civic buildings. The main Church of the Assumption is covered with fabulous carvings of grapevines, chained lions and deer, while inside there are some interesting fresco fragments. You can walk around the complex area and climb the highest tower of the fortress. On the way up, open views over the mountains, the church below and also reservoir spread bellow.

after Visited in Stepantsminda Historical Museum,The Museum is located in the memorial house of the Georgian writer Alexander Kazbegi (1848-1890). Together with the library and personal belongings of the writer, the museum houses ethnographic artifacts typical of the Khevi region; archaeological exhibits; religious relics; books, and various works from local artists.

Rise Gergeti Trinity Church. The magical town of Stepantsminda sits at the base of mount. Perched above it like a fairytale castle, is the Gergeti Trinity Church. The trek to church starts at the village Gergety and passes through lush forests and alpine fields. Built of massive granite blocks at a height of 2170 meters, the church and bell tower are dated to the 14th century. It is the only cupola church in the Khevi region. The church’s position on a high peak surrounded by nature has become a symbol of Georgia. During times of siege many sacred relics from around the country were brought here for safe keeping. You can hike up to the complex in about two hours, hire a driver, or even rent a horse!
