Makalu Base Camp Trek

Makalu Barun National Park is one of the most spectacular national parks in Nepal for its wildlife, jungle and the mountains. Mount Makalu (8,463m) world’s fifth highest mountain is located in this national park. Makalu Base Camp trek is newly established lodge based trekking in Makalu region which takes you deep into the high Himalaya while the giant of Makalu, The Great Black looms above you and Everest, Lhotse and Baruntse are all right in front of you . The verdant Arun and Barun river valleys lead to Makalu Base camp. The trail starts from Tumlingtar and while ascending or descending there are no flat walking sections, which make for quite arduous trekking. However, the natural surroundings are so beautiful that you will forget all the hardship and let the sceneric view soak in.

Mount Makalu is considered as one of the toughest 8000m peaks to climb – even the great Edmund Hillary failed twice. But the wilderness around it is just waiting to be explored by the intrepid trekker prepared to forget the comforts of teahouse treks.

As you walk up the river valleys, immense mountain vistas will unfold before you, including the massifs of Makalu, Everest and Lhotse. While on this trek you will encounter the indigenous groups of Rai, Limbu, Sherpa and Lhomi people you resides lower down. One of the most popular trekking peaks of Nepal, the Mera Peak (6654m), also lies in the Makalu Barun region. A large variety of common as well as endangered flora and fauna are protected in this region including rhododendrons, orchids, Snow Leopard, Red Panda, Musk Deer, Wild Boar, Wild Yak, Himalayan Thar, and more than 420 varieties of bird species. Some believe the area is also home to the elusive Himalayan giant, the Yeti.
